Group Blog 4/18/18 and Math Field Day

Today we all met up in H104 at 8:00 AM to discuss last minute details for math field day (this Saturday). The meeting today didn't have much collaboration it was just us running through all the details of the day (assigning roles, ironing out the schedule, just execution details). Since all we did was talk as a group we didn't need to develop new strategies, all we had to do was talk to each other it was simple. This is one of the last days before the event so we didn't need to re identify community needs since they have been decided upon from the first session. Our service project hopefully has a positive impact on the middle school students this weekend by encouraging them to love math. We didn't have any roadblocks because we were just talking. There wasn't even a need to divy up work since all we did was have a quick discussion this morning as a group. ------------ Math Field Day was overall successful, despite Ms. Dear and Dr. Ishii being absent we (the s...

We planned for the Math Field Day event, this meant that we emailed and called teachers, we did this in the math room in lower H, during the service learning day. Calling and emailing people is a simple activity and because of that it was unnecessary to talk to each other for work, because all the tests and challenges are created all there is left to do is to get people to come. During the next meetings we will buy supplies and get more people to come, and ultimately we will host the event and be done. Calling people isn't hard and everyone did it, we had no need to stop and develop new strategies, we don't need to continuously address community issues every single session we already have outlined the goals of our program, our work as service learning of course helped to make a positive impact otherwise we wouldn't be doing it, once again calling people isn't difficult and thus we faced no roadblocks, we delegated work by spending 3 mins writing names and schools on a w...

Sage Hill Math Field Day!!!! Today we had a few goals in mind (see photo), it was a rather mundane day as we went to work on our list. That meant the students capable of driving were dispatched as Math Field Day couriers to various schools in OC. Other members of the team were cooped up in the room (H108) grinding out the practice tests ensuring that they all were solvable, as well as making an official answer key for grading purposes. Regarding our other objectives for the day (how many awards, what were the awards going to be made of, and reserving facilities), these problems warranted a short discussion at the beginning of the day to decide who would be doing what. Ultimately Dr. Ishii, and Ms. Dear were going to handle the logistics of facilitates and awards. On the upcoming service learning meetings, we hope to finalize all the tests along with their answer keys, acquire prizes, purchase foodstuffs and other goodies, and gather all the necessary supplies for the day. Just like ...

Today was a very quiet day. Since all the real has already been doing, designing the challenges and testing the challenges we could afford to work at a slower pace. The day was very laid back, the first thing we did was check in with all the groups and make sure the invitations our "Save the Date" department painstakingly made were actually being used (sent out to real people instead of languishing in a google drive somewhere). After that we double checked that everything we needed was ready (the tests were designed), leaving only one real objective left on the agenda. Testing out the engineering challenge! This year's challenge involves water and boats, the water portion alone making the project far more interesting and fun. The gist of the competition is every team starts with 50 points, there points are used to purchase the materials used for the boat, with these materials the teams have 30 mins to make the best boat that is capable of going across the pool, and upon r...

Second service learning day of the year! Since we had already discussed the need for MFD, and its importance we didn't need to reopen the subject of community need for the project. The entire team was here today, and a lot of work was accomplished. The challenge designing portion of the project is nearly complete. Everyone came in on time (except for Richard) and we got started working without a hitch. Since the group had already delegated the work last time, everyone could immediately start to work. Also everyone knew what they were doing which eliminated the need to have a another conversation about how we would approach the project. Across the board people were working well together in their subgroups, and today all the challenges were completed. After the test were started we began to try out each other's tests to see if they were an appropriate difficultly for the middle school students.  Overall the group worked effectively and was able to accomplish all our goals fo...

Today was an excellent start to the start of the year to Math Field Day, our team has eleven students led by two excellent teachers. Throughout the entire day, we all stayed cooped up in H104 typing away on our computers planning our event. This meant combing through old test we had, designing the tests for this year, reaching out to schools to participate in our event, and other logistical details. Since our project lends itself to being easily compartmentalized the work was quickly split to the individuals within the group. This limited the amount of interaction once the work was started, but we still collaborated. The day opened on a group discussion where we decided what the format of the day would be and which test to include. Since this is a well established project, we didn't feel the need to reopen the subject of community need since we already understand and have developed the mission of the project. The project undoubtedly addresses a need in the community for support of ...

Introduction

Sage Math Field Day is an event designed to increase participation and interest in math for middle schooler students.  Saturday, April 21st we will be hosting many middle schoolers on Sage Hill campus and they will participate in math tests, challenges, and events.  Dr. Ishii and Mrs. Dear are heading the project, and the team members are Calvin Brown, Britanie Wang, Michelle Hung, David Ge, Richard Horn, Emin Torlic, Aydin Arik, Jeffrey Xu, and Ashley Wong.  We are hoping to partner with companies interested in increased youth participation in STEM.
