Emin Torlic
My name is Emin Torlic and I am a junior at Sage Hill school. I am excited to do math field day service learning this year, as math is one of my favorite subjects. This project seems fun because not only math is involved but there are other elements like marketing and public relations. Involving elements like this improves my skill set, hence why this project is so useful. Overall, this project seems like it is going to be a great and enjoyable year with lots learning.

Today was our first day as a whole group working together for our 7th Sage Hill Mathematics Invitational. The first thing we did today was organize which job each person will have, for example, I will be in charge of creating the Measurement test, organizing registration, as well as being a back up for the group blog. I helped out with testing out one of our test sections, the new Head-to-Head tournament that we will be implementing for the first time in this program. I and another friend, Aydin Arik, answered twenty questions and tried to answer first in order to get points. Aydin and I evaluated that the problems could be too tough for 7th/8th graders due to the amount of time it took us to solve. I got the rough draft of the invitation email done for the schools who we are asking to participate in our event. I also got started on the measurement test that I am in charge of, I got about a third done with that test. Today was a very informative day as I began to understand the meaning and process of what is needed to do this project. Throughout the day I improved my ability to cooperate with peers, give feedback for new ideas, as well as my focus to stay on task with my jobs. In future service learning days I will be cooperating with my partners and become more efficient with my work in preparation for our math tournament. Overall it was very exciting how our future days will be looking like and how the final event will be. I cannot look forward enough to the future of this service learning group and our final event, the 7th Sage Hill Mathematics Invitational or S.H.M.I.

January 10th Blog
Today we mainly worked on our engineering aspect for the Math Field Tests. In short, we tested our engineering project, building a boat out of supplies, and were able to tell how efficient it will be on test day. However, before we started working on the engineering, I was working on my test, Measurement, and touched up on a few questions before it was completely ready. By the time I finished it was lunch time and when we would come back we would be on our way to do the engineering project. Once I came back from lunch our group assembled to build the best boat, through our teamwork we devised a design that was perfectly crafted. Aydin Arik handled the building, Jordan Lopez handled the measurement, and Jeffrey Xu and I worked on the ideas behind the design for our boat. Our group’s boat was to be tested last after two other boats. After the first boat sailed and tested its weights, it was apparent that the efficiency and time it would take to do the engineering project on test day would be way too long. After the second group went, it was our groups turn and sailed across the pool fine, however, once we plopped a weight down on to the boat it sank after about 30 seconds. Since the time it took in total was about one and a half hours, including preparation, we have to shave off 30 minutes for the actual test day. Some suggestions I have to fix this issue would be to have a group of SHMI workers have their own jobs and essentially go through every boat and its tests like a conveyor belt. Also, for the weights test we could have someone standing in the shallow part of the pool picking up the weights once the boat would sink. This way it won’t be as much of a liability if someone just stands in the pool rather than dives or swims for weights. Overall, today was a success and we learned a lot and what we could improve on as a whole group.
