  I had a great time today meeting my peers who would also be participating in my service-learning project! As I said in my previous blog entry today was more of an introduction than a workday. Regardless, I still got a lot done by myself while still contributing to my team. I wrote around seven math problems that were tested out on my fellow peers. While there weren’t many challenges, coming up with unique problems in as small amount of words as possible was actually quite difficult. Not only that, but I had to get my problems approved for uniqueness and difficulty by my projects leaders. I learned that if I spend the time and come up with a thoughtful problem, it is in my best interest because I end up being more creative and getting the work done more quickly. I chose to take on the task to write a geometry test with one of my peers. I chose to write the geometry test with one of my peers who chose the same topic. Our priority as of today is to think of relevant geometry problems outside of class where we can implement them in the test. Me and Aydin will work hard to accomplish our goal and make an amazing test!

While working on the geometry test, there were some problems we encountered but they were solved at some point because of Aydin and I's problem solving skills. Making a test gave me a new perspective and gratitude on all the tests I take at school. One thing that helped the process go faster was looking at previous tests and looking at the internet for inspiration. My partner and I got a lot of work done and was able to be very productive the whole time and even got our peers to test the our tests.

Second service learning day of the year! Since we had already discussed the need for MFD, and its importance we didn't need to reopen the subject of community need for the project. The entire team was here today, and a lot of work was accomplished. The challenge designing portion of the project is nearly complete. Everyone came in on time (except for Richard) and we got started working without a hitch. Since the group had already delegated the work last time, everyone could immediately start to work. Also everyone knew what they were doing which eliminated the need to have a another conversation about how we would approach the project. Across the board people were working well together in their subgroups, and today all the challenges were completed. Introduction

Sage Math Field Day is an event designed to increase participation and interest in math for middle schooler students.  Saturday, April 21st we will be hosting many middle schoolers on Sage Hill campus and they will participate in math tests, challenges, and events.  Dr. Ishii and Mrs. Dear are heading the project, and the team members are Calvin Brown, Britanie Wang, Michelle Hung, David Ge, Richard Horn, Emin Torlic, Aydin Arik, Jeffrey Xu, and Ashley Wong.  We are hoping to partner with companies interested in increased youth participation in STEM.

Group Blog 10/4/17

Today was an excellent start to the start of the year to Math Field Day, our team has eleven students led by two excellent teachers. Throughout the entire day, we all stayed cooped up in H104 typing away on our computers planning our event. This meant combing through old test we had, designing the tests for this year, reaching out to schools to participate in our event, and other logistical details. Since our project lends itself to being easily compartmentalized the work was quickly split to the individuals within the group. This limited the amount of interaction once the work was started, but we still collaborated. The day opened on a group discussion where we decided what the format of the day would be and which test to include. Since this is a well established project, we didn't feel the need to reopen the subject of community need since we already understand and have developed the mission of the project.
