Jeffery Xu
Hello, I am Jeffrey Xu. I am a junior this year, and I am pursuing this project because I enjoy math quite a lot, and I am currently taking AP Calculus BC. In addition, I thought that this project would be fun because sounded much better than all of the other projects that were presented, and it's about math. I also find working with others to create a project that benefits the community is some way enlightening as well. I hope to be a great addition to this team by adding an element of fun yet creativity towards this project.

We just had our first service learning day. I was allocated the town meeting job, the algebra test job, and the sponsors job. Today, I quite enjoyed working with my friends doing math and preparing for Math Field Day. One particular instance that was quite exciting was our practice of the Countdown activity that we well have during that day. Aydin Ziya Arik and Emin Torlic entered the fabulous competition and we all also solved the problems as well. It was entertaining to see them go head to head while the people watching also solved the problems. The amount of work actually stuck out to me because there were actually a ton of logistics that went into putting together Math Field Day. I actually enjoyed all of the work because it was with friends and it had to do with Math. I feel like that I am more connected to the people that I am working with and the teachers as well. In addition, I also feel like I gained a more developed set of communication skills by communicating with my team members. I persevered through the challenge of coming up with the Engineering activity which might be building a boat that can make a heavy object float. Honestly, I learned nothing about myself through my first day of Service Learning. I can improve on communication by being a bit more patient and waiting to say things when the time is right because I sometimes feel like I say somethings in the wrong time. Overall, the first day was quite good because we all worked hard and completed something.

Today I made the Algebra test with Ashley and it was so much fun. I loved doing it so much. I gained a newfound respect for teachers who make their own test because it can be extremely tough to make one because of all of the logistics that go into it. Also, I solved a lot of math problems for other groups because they wanted someone to test their problems to see if they were good. In addition, I also sent emails to random schools to send them a save the date email which was pretty cool. I feel like overall that I learned to work with my group members more and the whole experience has been pretty cool. the only hard part about today was that when we needed someone to take our math test no one was willing to do it which sucked.

Today was a very mild day. We put the finishing touches to our tests and the finishing touches to our Engineering Activity. We tested the activity by building the boat and putting the weights on the boat. However, there were problems because the weights would constantly drop into the water and since we all didn’t have our bathing suits it was very hard to get the weights. Everything else however was fun because it was very chillax day and I even had time to do some homework. Also, Aydin Arik and I found out who in our school was a certified lifeguard. Today was a very productive day. We also learned to fix parts of the Engineering challenge to make it a little better.
