Michelle Hung
My name is Michelle Hung and I'm a junior this year in the Math Field Day project. I joined because I'm interested in math and love writing math problems and working with younger kids to get the passionate about math. I hope I have the opportunity in this project to have fun, do some math, and help kids. I'm excited for the year and for working with other like-minded people.

Service Learning Personal Reflection 10/4/17
I enjoyed the first day of Math Field Day because I was with others who like math and we could talk about math and work together. Despite coming from all kinds of different middle school experiences in terms of math, experience in math, or math classes at Sage, we all could contribute to making a math test for middle schoolers, so I think that there was a great sense of connection among the community. We disagreed on some organizational aspects, so if anything that would be a challenge, but we persevered and came to an agreement by the end.
Specifically, one thing we had to get through was deciding which math topics to include in the test (geometry, algebra, probability, measurement, etc.) but we figured that out amongst ourselves.
I’m in charge of the countdown round portion of the contest, along with Calvin. The countdown round is a head-to-head round where students compete to solve problems that are shown on the screen using a projector. I’ll help write the 50 or so problems, edit them, and try to make them at an 8th grade level.
One fun story from today was when we tested the 20 countdown problems we’ve written so far and a few people faced off to solve problems. We decided that the problems were probably too hard and we should make them more at an 8th grade level.
I think the teamwork aspect is moving along well so far, but as we get to know each other and our working styles better, we will get better at collaboration and communication, which are necessary to write math problems.

SL Day 2 Reflection
The second day of the Math Field Day project was today. My main goals for today were to finish the Countdown round test and to take care of some emails to middle schools to spark interest in the event.
The Countdown round test consists of 70 problems ranging a variety of topics accessible to middle school students. The challenge was creating a diverse set of problems that were interesting yet easy enough for a middle school student to solve quickly. Another challenge was recalling what I learned in middle school so the tests would be at the correct level and not too hard. I wrote probably 30 problems today, which I think was a pretty good use of time and I worked efficiently.
I continued to make use of the 6 C’s in this meeting. Most of all, creativity was a factor because that is necessary to write interesting, new problems. Also, I needed to communicate with Calvin and the others writing problems because we needed to make sure to not repeat problems and collaborate on the format and level of the problems. This required lots of planning and teamwork.
I also helped check the Measurement test that others in my group made, and added comments to improve the test. We overall made a lot of progress today, and the first drafts of the tests are mostly complete. Next time, we will hopefully finalize the tests and then move on to more fun interactive aspects of the planning in order to make Math Field Day an enjoyable experience for the middle school kids in April!
